How the verdict works

Rip it
The cards are worth at least 10% more than the box after selling costs, and fewer than half of boxes lose money.
Toss-up
Anything in between, or a box that only wins on average because of rare big pulls.
Keep it sealed
The cards are worth at least 10% less than the box. Buy singles instead.

Questions

How do you work out if a box is worth opening?

We take today's Cardmarket price for every card in the set, take off what selling them costs, and open 100,000 virtual boxes using the pull rates. The verdict compares what the cards are worth with what the box costs, and checks how often a box loses money.

Where do the prices come from?

From Cardmarket's price guide, which Cardmarket publishes every day. Card and box prices update every morning.

Do you count selling costs?

Yes. By default we take off a 5% marketplace fee and €0.25 for every card you sell, and cards under €1.00 go to bulk at €0.01. You can change all of that on any set page, or count every card at full price if you keep them.

What does Toss-up mean?

The cards are worth about what the box costs, or the box only beats its price on average because of a few rare big pulls. You might win big, but most boxes won't.

How sure are the pull rates?

Every rate says where it comes from: the publisher, a published estimate, or our own assumption for cheap slots. When rates are uncertain, we show a likely range next to the verdict.

Which games do you cover?

Pokémon (English and Japanese), Magic: The Gathering, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lorcana, Riftbound, Star Wars: Unlimited, Flesh and Blood, Dragon Ball, Digimon, Gundam, Union Arena and more: every booster box from a game's first set to the next one coming out.

Is this financial advice?

No. Prices change, and any single box can do much better or worse than average. Use it to decide with your eyes open.
